Delicious, flavorful lettuce brings color and zest to salads. The red coloring develops best in cool weather. A good variety for specialty markets.

What are the pros? not bitter, doesn't bolt

What are the cons? none

Review:

I received this lettuce as a free gift. I planted this variety with another romaine type lettuce called "little gem". This red romaine one was far superior in flavor! It kept its sweetness throughout the summer (it did become more zesty when we forgot to water or the temps went up for a few days in a row, but still good!), whereas the green little gem was more bitter. This lettuce was the first lettuce I've grown that didn't bolt right away. In fact it's now August in zone 5 and it still is growing in compact bunches! All other lettuce I've tried is usually bolted, bitter and inedible by now! Since it is a romaine type, it is also much easier to harvest than most leaf types, as you can just cut along the base of the stem and it stays in its bunch. Another plus, is that my chickens left it alone! They ended up eating all the green lettuce, and left the best (this variety) behind!

Review:

This lettuce germinated and grew quickly into delicious red leaves. I grew it in a container in partial shade for four months before it bolted. Awesome plant!

What are the pros? pretty, pest resistant

What are the cons? none

Review:

This is very beautiful in the garden and has grown quickly and easily. The taste is really good. I like that the bugs don't seem to be bothering it at all (even though they are trying out ple ty of other greens planted around it!) I even had rogue seed (proba ly dropped accidently by myself) sprout and grow a pretty bunch in another bed!

What are the pros? Beautiful, tender, hardy

What are the cons? None

Review:

This lettuce is so beautiful in the garden that my long-time gardening uncle suggested I not remove it because it was as pretty as flowers. Not only that, my family with neighboring gardens came to collect this lettuce from me long after theirs turned bitter. This remained tender and delicious (and adds glory to any salad) long into the season. This last week, I planted more to enjoy in the fall.
