An old-time melon listed by American seedsmen in the 1830's but probably goes back much further; believed to come from Italy. Can keep four months into the winter. Very sweet cream-colored flesh, dark green skin; rare and delicious.

What are the pros? Adds a third month of harvest

What are the cons? none

Review:

We grew Valencia this year along with a half-dozen other varieties. We grow in full sun with plenty of water. The vines were prolific, and the melons were of average size. The melons start out light green and eventually turn very dark green after about a month (late June), However, those we picked at this stage had no sweetness, although they appeared to have a mature seed cavity. A month later (late July), when most other melon varieties were done, we tried another, and it also had no sweetness. After enduring yet another month, including mostly 100 degree weather, we tried again in late August (3 months on the vine). The melons were still well attached, but now they were sweet and crunchy. As a result, we'll grow Valencia every year to extend melon season a third month. Valencia's key attribute is its tough (but very thin) skin, which thoroughly resists insects, rot and splitting. For us, a very valuable melon!

Grew these on the south side of my house in zone 4 Wi. It smells like a cucumber when sliced open and has a very fresh, sweet, crisp flavor. I'm looking forward to seeing if the taste changes at all while in storage. Will grown again!

Review:

We planted these melons for the first time this year. Even with a late start, due to a very wet spring, the vines produced tons of melons! We harvested over twenty melons from only 3 vines. The taste is incredible and they really do keep for a long time, we still have a pile of melons left and plan to have some with thanksgiving dinner in two days! My uncle says that they always save their last one for new years eve...we'll see if they last!
