Description

(Brassica oleracea var. alboglabra) The delectable, tender stalks taste like a cross between asparagus and broccoli, only sweeter. Our favorite spring vegetable, this is a very easy-to-grow broccoli-like plant from China. The tender blue-green, glossy leaves are similar to kale but better, and the broccoli-like inflorescences are buttery soft and nutty in flavor. So tasty! A must-have for those who long for broccoli but struggle to grow it, and excellent for market gardeners as well.

Growing Tips

Use well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Choose a spot that receives 4-6 hours of sun daily. Keep soil moist, as plants do not tolerate drought. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Use a balanced fertilizer or compost tea every few weeks.

When to Grow

Best planted in cool spring or fall conditions. Chinese broccoli can tolerate light frost. Ideal temperatures are 60-80 F.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows 18-24 inches apart. Thin plants 8 inches apart when they reach about 3 inches tall to provide proper space for growth. Sprouts appear in 10-14 days.

How to Grow

Water deeply once or twice a week, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Maintain mulch and apply fertilizer periodically. Monitor for pests like aphids and cabbage loopers, and use organic control methods. Ensure good air circulation to prevent diseases.

Begin harvesting when the tops begin to flower. All parts of the plant are edible, including flowers and stems. Cut about 8 inches from the top, leaving a few leaves in place to encourage new growth. In most areas, this will be a cut-and-come-again crop you can enjoy all season long.

How to Save

Allow the late season plants to bolt, and once they flower you can allow the seeds to dry completely, shake them free of the flowers, and save them in a cool, dark, and dry place for next year’s garden.
