About Armeria Maritima Seeds

(Armeria maritima). Armeria maritima, or sea thrift, is a small, slow-spreading evergreen with little balls of tiny flowers in shades of pink or white on longer stems. It's a perennial in USDA zones 4-8. It grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Very drought-tolerant with a deep tap root, it does well in xeriscapes and rock gardens. Unlike many other evergreen perennials, it should not be cut back in the fall. Often used as ground cover.

Rugged and Early to Bloom

Tolerant of Poor Soil

Armeria maritima grows wild on coastal ground across the northern hemisphere, in the thin, marginal soil most perennials won't tolerate. That history is the whole selling point. Give it a lean, sharply drained spot and it asks for almost nothing else — rich, damp ground is what kills it.

Blooms Before Most

The flowers open early and hold through late spring, covering the stretch when a perennial bed is still mostly foliage. Round heads on slender stems: magenta on Morning Star Deep Rose, clean white on Morning Star White. Out of bloom, the grassy tuft still reads as something deliberate rather than a gap.

Small Space Staple

Neither one gets above a foot. Deep Rose runs 8 to 12 inches, Morning Star White 6 to 10, which makes both easy to place — a rock garden, the front of a border, a window box, a pot by the door. Massed, the white one holds up as ground cover where foot traffic is light.
