About Ageratum Seeds

(Ageratum houstonianum) This member of the Aster family is prized by gardeners for its delightful colors and whimsical, pompom-shaped flowers. A popular bedding plant typically grown as an annual, Ageratum also performs well when grown in containers. Be sure to keep your plants well-watered, especially during the heat of summer! A lovely and easy-to-grow old favorite!

Soft Color and Long Bloom

Clouds of Blue

True blue is the hardest color to find in a garden, and ageratum is one of the few annuals that delivers. The petals are fine as silk thread—hence the name floss flower—and the soft periwinkle makes warm colors planted nearby look better than they would alone. Red Flint breaks ranks entirely, in berry and plum.

Pick Your Height

Check the height before you buy, because these three go to very different places. Leda tops out around 8 inches and belongs at the front of a bed or spilling over a container edge. Ball Mixed sits at 12. Red Flint runs to 24 — tall enough to cut and bring inside.

No Pinching Required

Surface-sow the seed and leave it uncovered. Ageratum needs light to germinate, and burying it is the usual reason a packet fails. After that there's not much asked of you: no pinching, no staking, and bloom from midsummer until frost. Here's How to Grow Ageratum From Seed.
