(Cucumis sativus). This creamy fruit has delicious, crisp, and juicy flesh. A sweet and mild Indian variety, it hails from the city of Poonah, or Pune, the cultural capital of the state of Maharashtra, India. There, it is popular juiced or in salads, and Pune street vendors sell it as a snack to beat the intense heat. Poona Keera is simply divine when sliced and sprinkled with a bit of salt and pepper. Fruits turn from light green to golden yellow to russet brown and may be eaten at any stage, skin and all. Disease resistant and very hardy, it is one of our best varieties. Vines produce early and the yield is very heavy.

Growing Tips

Poona Kheera cucumbers produce oblong fruits that transition from light green to golden brown as they mature. This vigorous, open-pollinated variety thrives in rich soil and sunny locations. Trellising helps conserve space and ensures straight fruits. Regular harvesting encourages continual production and prevents over-maturity. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Sow Poona Kheera cucumber seeds outdoors after the final frost, when soil temperatures reach at least 70°F. For shorter seasons, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting. This heat-tolerant heirloom thrives in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil throughout summer. How to Sow and Plant

Prepare garden beds with compost-rich soil and good drainage. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 12 to 18 inches apart in rows or hills. Install a trellis at planting time to promote vertical growth, reduce fruit blemishes, and improve access for harvesting. Water thoroughly after sowing and keep soil consistently moist for germination.

How to Grow

p>Water regularly at the base, keeping the soil evenly moist. Avoid overhead watering to reduce risk of powdery mildew. Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize every 2–3 weeks with an organic, balanced blend. Harvest at 4–6 inches long for a pale, mild cucumber or allow to ripen for a sweeter, richer flavor.

How to Save

  • Select disease-free plants for seed saving.
  • Allow fruits to fully ripen on the vine (they will turn deep brown and soften).
  • Scoop out seeds and pulp into a jar or bowl with water.
  • Ferment at room temperature for 2–3 days, stirring daily.
  • Rinse seeds thoroughly and dry on a screen or paper towel for 1–2 weeks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in a labeled and dated airtight container.

FAQ

Is it okay to eat Poona Kheera cucumbers when the skin turns brown?
Yes, the brown skin is a natural part of ripening. Unlike many cucumbers, Poona Kheera remains sweet and crunchy even as it darkens, offering a richer flavor with added texture.

Can Poona Kheera cucumbers be grown in containers?
Yes, this variety performs well in large containers with a depth of at least 12 inches. Use a trellis to support the vines and ensure the container is placed in full sun.

Do Poona Kheera cucumbers require peeling before eating?
No, the skin is edible at all stages. While some prefer to peel mature brown fruits for aesthetic reasons, the skin remains tender and nutritious throughout the fruit’s growth cycle.
