Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Prepare a well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. Incorporate compost or a balanced fertilizer to enrich the soil. The lettuce thrives best in full sun, but it can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates. Ensure 4-8 hours of sun daily. Consistent moisture is key; therefore, water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

When to Grow

Merveille des Quatre Saisons can be grown almost year-round in many climates, but it performs best in cooler temperatures typical of spring and fall. The ideal temperatures are between 60-80 F. It is quite hardy and can withstand light frosts, making it suitable for early spring and late fall planting. For continuous harvest, sow seeds every few weeks from early spring through late summer. In warmer climates, partial shade can help prevent bolting during summer.

How to Sow and Plant

For best results, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and transplant seedlings outdoors when they have at least 2-3 leaves. Sow in thick bands for baby greens or space 8 inches apart for head lettuce. Direct sowing is also an option; plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in rows 12-18 inches apart as soon as the soil can be worked in spring.

How to Grow

Merveille des Quatre Saisons lettuce requires moderate watering to keep the soil consistently moist. Using mulch can help retain moisture and reduce weed competition. This lettuce variety benefits from a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to promote rapid growth and tender leaves. Regular weeding is essential, as young lettuce plants are vulnerable to competition. In hotter climates, providing some afternoon shade can help prevent the plants from bolting.

How to Save

  • Lettuce is a self-pollinating annual, making it an easy crop for seed saving.
  • Do not harvest plants. Allow them to send up flower stalks.
  • Once seed heads are dried and have turned a yellowish-tan color, cut the entire stalk and place in a bag.
  • Crush the seed heads in the bag and separate the chaff.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 years.
