Maltese Cross - Wildflower

1 Review | Write a Review
(Lychnis chalcedonica) Large 3’-4’ tall spikes produce stunning neon flame-red colored clusters of blooms. This perennial often blooms the first year, if started very early. Was grown by Thomas Jefferson in 1807, and it still is one of the showiest flowers of early summer!

What are the pros? Attracts hummingbirds

What are the cons? A bit lanky

The hummingbirds found these bright red flowers in my small city garden, the best reason to grow them. The flower clusters are sparse on the plants so plant in groups. Deadhead to prolong bloom season.
