Chen is a certified seed technologist based at Baker Creek’s fulfillment center in Seymour, Missouri. He leads the germination testing team, ensuring every variety is tested multiple times a year to meet or exceed quality standards.

He studied Agricultural Business and Plant Science at Missouri State University and joined Baker Creek in 2022 after eight years with Pennington Seed. An active member of the Society of Commercial Seed Technologists, Chen enjoys gardening and cooking—especially growing Prairie Fire tomatoes and Music garlic.

Good seed, carefully tested
We test germination twice each year—double the federal standard—and our warehouse is overseen by a certified seed technologist Xu Chen (left)(above), so you can trust what’s in every packet.

Guaranteed to grow
Every seed comes with a no-questions-asked, two-year guarantee. If something isn’t right, we’ll make it right.

Free shipping, always
We offer 100% free shipping in the USA, whether your order is $3 or $300. No thresholds. No fine print.

Old-fashioned seeds, the way they used to be
We sell only open-pollinated seeds—no GMOs, no treated seed, no patented varieties. Even the new varieties we develop are released for public use. Every seed is untreated and ready for your garden.

Grown and trialed on our own farms
Nearly everything we offer is grown and tested on our official farms in Missouri and Jamaica, where we also do breeding, selection, and organic research. Our family and staff grow these seeds too—because we love gardening and care about the details.

Gardeners at heart
Our owner planted his first garden at age two, and many of our staff are lifelong gardeners. We know the joy of good soil, strong plants, and a harvest well earned.

A global seed story
Our team comes from over a dozen countries, and our work reaches gardeners around the world. Every seed carries a story of culture, history, and good food worth preserving.

Community comes first
We host festivals, welcome school groups, offer farm visits, and love swapping stories at the seed counter. Getting more hands in the soil is part of the mission.

Old catalogs, new connections
We still print classic paper catalogs, run seed stores and working farms, and stay connected online—sharing what’s growing and what we’re learning day by day.

Giving back is part of the work
Each year we donate around one million seed packets, along with support for humanitarian relief and gardening projects. We do our best to run with a giving spirit.

Here to help, no matter what
If we don’t have the seed you’re looking for, we’ll try to help you find it elsewhere. Whether you buy from us or not, we’re glad to help you grow.
