Growing Tips

The Apocalypse Scorpion is an heirloom pepper that thrives in warm, full-sun conditions and grows up to 4 feet tall in rich, well-draining soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Due to their intense heat, handle peppers with gloves and caution.

When to Grow

Start Apocalypse Scorpion seeds indoors 8–12 weeks before the last frost, as they need warm soil to germinate. Ideally, the temperature should be around 70-95 F. In cooler regions, consider starting them earlier indoors for a longer growing season.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays with well-draining soil. Once seedlings are about 4–6 inches tall, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting. Space them 14-18 inches apart in rich, well-draining soil.

How to Grow

Water Apocalypse Scorpion peppers deeply about once a week, but avoiding over-watering, as these peppers are susceptible to root rot. A balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) can be applied every two weeks to support vigorous growth and fruit production. Always handle these peppers with gloves and eye protection to avoid irritation from their intense heat.

How to Save

  • Peppers are mainly self-pollinating, but bees occasionally work pepper flowers as well.
  • To be absolutely sure that you will not have any crossing, different varieties should be isolated by at least 500 feet.
  • It is a good idea to wear gloves when working with very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
  • To save seed, allow the fruit to mature fully; then simply remove seeds.
  • Let seeds dry for a week before storing them in a jar.
  • Pepper seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years.
