Black Swan poppies should be sown directly outdoors in very early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked and while frosts are still expected, or in late fall in warmer climates. The seedlings are frost hardy and benefit from the cold exposure of early spring. Press the fine seed onto the surface and do not cover it, keeping the surface moist until seedlings appear in 14 to 21 days; poppies resent transplanting, so direct sowing is strongly preferred. To plant, scatter the seeds on well-drained, loose soil and press them in gently. Keep the area moist until germination, which usually takes 14-21 days. Once seedlings appear, thin them to about 8-10 inches apart to give each plant room to grow​.

Once established, Black Swan poppies require little maintenance. They are drought-tolerant, so after the seedlings are well-rooted, water them sparingly. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. The plants will produce beautiful seed pods after the flowers fade, which can be used in dried arrangements​.

• Poppies are mostly self-pollinating; however, small flies and honeybees may cross-pollinate closely planted varieties.
• Often self-sows, but you can also harvest seeds when capsules turn brown and dry completely.
• Save seed over winter in a cool, dark, dry place.
