Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Our favorite tomato! Large, elongated cherries in clusters. The color (and flavor!) is a full-blown assault on the senses—lavender and purple stripes that turn to Technicolor olive-green, red, and brown/blue stripes when fully ripe. Really wild! Fruit holds well on the vine or off, making this amazing variety a good candidate for market growers. Olive green interior is blushed with red when dead-ripe. Crack-resistant fruit is extraordinarily sweet! Wispy foliage looks delicate but belies these plants’ rugged constitution and high productivity. These range some in size from a large grape to plum sized. AMAZING!

Growing Guide

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant outdoors once the frost risk has passed and nighttime temperatures don’t drop below 50 F. In cooler climates, consider starting earlier or using row covers to extend the season. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post "Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources."

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep the soil warm, at least 75 F F, for optimal germination. When transplanting, space plants about 24 inches apart to accommodate their vigorous growth. Staking or caging is recommended to support the vines and prevent sprawling.

How to Grow

Brad's Atomic grape tomatoes need consistent watering, aiming to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks to support growth. Pruning helps manage the plant’s size and increases airflow, which can reduce disease risk. Harvest the fruits when they have turned a deep purple or red and feel slightly soft to the touch.

How to Save Seeds

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.

FAQ

How can I know when Brad’s Atomic grape tomatoes are ripe?

The fruits are ready to harvest when the lavender and purple striping has shifted to Technicolor olive-green with red and brown-blue stripes and the shoulders lose their hard green; cut one open and a dead-ripe fruit shows olive-green flesh blushed with red.

Are Brad’s Atomic grape tomatoes suitable for containers?

Yes, they can be grown in containers with a minimum size of 5 gallons, provided they have adequate support, due to their vining nature.

What are common pests and diseases for Brad’s Atomic grape tomatoes?

This variety can be affected by pests like aphids and tomato hornworms. Common diseases include early blight and fusarium wilt, which can be managed with good sanitation practices and crop rotation.
