Description

(Raphanus sativus). This colorful “Beauty Heart” radish of historic China has 4-inch round roots with white-and-green skin, but the magic is in its rose-red center, which is sweet, crisp, and delicious. A good radish to add color to salads and stir-fries. These taste incredible when harvested in the late fall or early winter, sweet and flavorful, almost like a crisp fruit. Sometimes called “Watermelon Radish” as well. Among the most important vegetables in our kitchens each winter. It is a root that most kids love and packs an extra load of antioxidants in its sweet, red flesh.

Growing Tips

Chinese Red Meat radishes grow best in well-drained, loose soil and full sun. Consistent moisture is important to prevent the roots from becoming woody. These radishes can be lifted and stored in very cool (33 F), humid conditions, where they will keep for weeks.

When to Grow

These radishes are best grown in late summer for a fall harvest when temperatures are cooler, ideally between 50-75 F. They can even tolerate light frost. Avoid planting during the hot summer months, which can cause bolting and a reduction in flavor quality.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly into the soil about 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 1-2 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. After germination, thin seedlings to about 4 inches apart to ensure adequate space for root development. For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every two weeks.

How to Grow

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, to encourage growth. Mulch can help retain moisture and reduce weed competition. Monitor for pests such as flea beetles and root maggots, which can affect radish leaves and roots. Regular weeding is necessary to prevent competition for nutrients.

How to Save

  • Radishes are insect-pollinated, so you’ll need to isolate varieties by up to 1⁄2 mile or stagger plantings to avoid flowering at the same time.
  • Staggering can be easy because of the radish’s quick maturity.
  • Allow flower stalks to shoot up and seed pods to dry on the plant before picking pods and opening by hand to remove the seeds.
  • Seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years when stored in an airtight container.
