Description

(Raphanus sativus). No other vegetable stirred Jere’s childhood imagination like the “Giant Radish” of Japan. It has been grown on the Island of Sakurajima since around 1800 and is still famous in southern Japan for its fine flavor and mammoth size. Some specimens have reached 100 lbs! But it commonly grows to 15 pounds in its native land. It is started around the first of September and harvested in mid-winter. Fine texture and size make this the “King of Daikons”.

Growing Tips

The Sakurajima Giant radish grows best in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 5.8 and 6.8. It’s important to keep the soil consistently moist, as dryness can lead to cracking of the roots. Additionally, using a balanced fertilizer high in potassium can help enhance the growth of these massive radishes.

When to Grow

The ideal time to plant Sakurajima Giant radishes is in late summer for harvest after the weather begins to cool. This timing allows the radish to mature during the cooler months, as it performs best in temperatures between 50 F and 75 F. In warmer regions, such as USDA hardiness zones 8 and above, it can even be grown throughout the winter.

How to Sow and Plant

Direct sowing is recommended for Sakurajima Giant radishes. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and thin them to 24 inches apart to accommodate their large size. Rows should be spaced at least 2 feet apart to ensure adequate room for the radishes to grow without competition.

How to Grow

These radishes require regular watering to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help maintain moisture levels and suppress weed growth. As they grow, you can mound soil around the base to support the plant and prevent the radish from being exposed to sunlight, which can lead to a bitter taste. Regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer will support their growth, particularly during the early stages.

How to Save

  • Radishes are insect-pollinated, so you’ll need to isolate varieties by up to 1/2 mile or stagger plantings to avoid flowering at the same time.
  • Staggering can be easy because of the radish’s quick maturity.
  • Allow flower stalks to shoot up and seed pods to dry on the plant before picking pods and opening by hand to remove the seeds.
  • Seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years when stored in an airtight container.
