Description

(Cucurbita maxima). Possibly our most beautiful heirloom squash. This flattened, round, 10-15 lb fruit has gorgeous, salmon/peach-colored skin covered with large warts! The deep orange flesh is flavorful, smooth, and sweet, making it good for baking. It’s also popular among the French for making soup. This is one of the tastiest squash I have tried, and we are delighted to offer this French heirloom.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Galeux d'Eysines requires full sun, so choose a location in your garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. The squash thrives in rich, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Water deeply at the base of the plants, avoiding overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

When to Grow

Plant Galeux d'Eysines after the last frost when soil temperatures are consistently above 65 F, as these plants are extremely sensitive to frost. In cooler climates, starting seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost can help ensure a successful harvest. This variety typically matures in about 95-100 days.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly into the garden at a depth of 1/2-1 inch, spacing them 18-36"apart. Thin seedlings to the strongest plant per spot. This squash thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil, so be sure to amend the soil with compost before planting. Harvest when rinds become very hard.

How to Grow

Maintain consistent moisture throughout the growing season, especially during flowering and fruiting stages. To prevent common issues like powdery mildew, ensure good air circulation around the plants by avoiding overcrowding and watering at the base rather than from overhead. Trellising can also help manage the sprawling vines.

How to Save
  • There are four different species of squash: Cucurbita maxima, C. pepo, C. moschata, and C. mixta. They will not cross pollinate with each other, so it is possible to grow one of each species for seed saving without worrying about cross pollination.
  • If you are planning to grow several varieties of more than one species, you can bag the blossoms and hand pollinate to avoid crossing.
  • Whether it is a summer or winter squash, you must let the fruit completely mature before extracting the seeds, and cure for at least two weeks.
  • Scoop the seeds, place them in a bucket, and add just enough water to cover. Let sit at room temperature to ferment for two days before rinsing off the pulp.
  • Lay seeds out to dry on newspaper or paper plates.
  • Stored in a cool, dry place, seeds will remain viable for up to four years.

FAQ

What makes Galeux d'Eysines squash special?
Galeux d'Eysines is known for its distinctive warty skin, which is caused by sugar buildup in the flesh. The more warts, the sweeter the squash. This unique appearance, combined with its excellent flavor, makes it both a decorative and culinary favorite.

Can Galeux d'Eysines squash be grown in small spaces?
Due to its large, sprawling vines, Galeux d'Eysines requires ample space. However, you can manage the growth by using trellises or other vertical supports to train the vines upward, saving garden space.

How long can Galeux d'Eysines squash be stored after harvest?
Galeux d'Eysines squash can be stored for several months if properly cured and stored. After harvesting, cure the squash in a warm, dry place for about 10-14 days to harden the skin. Once cured, store the squash in a cool, dry location with temperatures between 50-60 F. Proper storage conditions can help maintain the squash's quality for 3-6 months.
