Bee Balm

(monarda family) Balms like monarda (bee balm) and lemon balm belong to the mint family. The strongly flavored foliage is an excellent addition to teas, and the tubular flowers can be used for a delightfully unique garnish. A favorite of pollinators and hummingbirds! Perennial in zones 4-9. Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost, or direct sow after last frost. Surface sow seeds and keep moist. Sprouts in 14-21 days. Space plants 12 inches apart. These carefree herbs prefer full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Deadhead faded blooms to encourage flowering in late summer. Plants form clumps that will regrow each year.
