Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Our favorite tomato! Large, elongated cherries in clusters. The color (and flavor!) is a full-blown assault on the senses—lavender and purple stripes, that turn to Technicolor olive-green, red, and brown/blue stripes when fully ripe. Really wild! Fruit holds well on the vine or off, making this amazing variety a good candidate for market growers. Crack-resistant fruit is extraordinarily sweet! Wispy foliage looks delicate but belies these plants’ rugged constitution and high productivity. These range in size from a large grape to plum-sized.

Growing Tips

Brad's Atomic grape is an indeterminate tomato variety that requires full sun and well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. In colder climates, consider using a heat map to help warm the soil and speed up germination.   Learn More >>

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant outdoors once the frost risk has passed and nighttime temperatures don’t drop below 50 F. In cooler climates, consider starting earlier or using row covers to extend the season.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep the soil warm, at least 75 F F, for optimal germination. When transplanting, space plants about 24 inches apart to accommodate their vigorous growth. Staking or caging is recommended to support the vines and prevent sprawling.

How to Grow

Brad's Atomic grape tomatoes need consistent watering, aiming to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks to support growth. Pruning helps manage the plant’s size and increases airflow, which can reduce disease risk. Harvest the fruits when they have turned a deep purple or red and feel slightly soft to the touch.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and crossing isn’t likely; separating by 25 feet is sufficient for pure seed, except for the potato-leaf varieties like Brandywine.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for 1-2 days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored at room temperature, and good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
