Growing Tips

Juana’s Orange amaranth is an eye-catching heirloom variety known for its vivid orange flower plumes and nutritious leaves. Ideal for edible landscaping or pollinator gardens, it thrives in summer heat and poor soils with minimal care.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before your last frost date or sow directly outdoors when soil is warm and danger of frost has passed. This variety thrives during the warmest months. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Plant seeds 1/8 inch deep in well-drained soil. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination. Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin to 12–15 inches apart to ensure good airflow and strong upright growth.

How to Grow

Provide full sun for the most vibrant color and tallest growth. Once established, Juana’s Orange amaranth is drought-tolerant. Regular weeding and minimal supplemental watering are all it needs. Avoid rich fertilizers to encourage flower production.

How to Save

  • Allow seed heads to dry completely on the plant
  • Clip and store heads in a dry, well-ventilated space, or in a paper bag indoors
  • Rub seed heads gently to release seeds
  • Use a fine screen or winnow to remove chaff
  • Store seeds in a cool, dry location for future planting
