Growing Tips

Bee balm grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. These plants prefer well-drained, loamy soil enriched with organic matter like compost. They like full sun to light shade and average, well-drained soil. The plants should not be kept saturated or allowed to wilt. Perennial in zones 4-9.

When to Grow

Bee balm is best started indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost. Set outside after the last frost. This timing allows the plants to establish themselves before the summer heat. May also be sown directly after the last frost.

How to Sow and Plant

If starting indoors, use seedling trays or small pots filled with a light, well-draining soil mix. Sow the seeds on the surface and lightly press them into the soil without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Once seedlings have developed at least two sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted outdoors, spaced 12 inches apart to ensure good airflow.

How to Grow

Bee balm requires regular watering, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer or by top-dressing with compost. For bushier growth and more blooms, you can pinch back the stems when the plants are about 12 inches tall. Deadheading spent flowers can also encourage additional blooming. In late fall, cut back the stems to a few inches above the ground to prepare for winter.

How to Save

Seeds usually mature 1-3 weeks after flowers bloom. To test, bend the spent head into a bag and tap. If the seeds are brown, they are ready. Spread them out and allow them to dry for 2-3 days. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place.
