Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Nootka Rose garlic thrives in well-draining soil rich in organic matter. The ideal soil pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. Try to ensure that the planting site receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

When to Grow

Nootka Rose garlic is ideally planted in the fall, between September and November, to allow the cloves to form roots before the ground freezes. In mild coastal areas where the ground doesn't freeze, early spring planting is also possible. Fall planting generally yields larger bulbs.

How to Sow and Plant

Soil Preparation: Choose a well-draining site with full sun. You can enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to make it more fertile.
Clove Selection and Planting: Choose large, healthy bulbs and separate them into individual cloves. Plant the cloves 2-3 inches deep, with the pointed end facing up. Space the cloves 6-8 inches apart in rows 10-14 inches apart.

How to Grow

Nootka Rose garlic requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, but also make sure that the soil is not waterlogged. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in the spring as the plants begin to grow. Reduce watering as the bulbs mature to help them form protective outer layers.

FAQ

How long does it take for Nootka Rose garlic to mature?
Nootka Rose garlic typically takes about 240 days (8 months) to mature when planted in the fall. Spring-planted garlic can be ready in about 90 days, but the bulbs are usually smaller.

Can I grow Nootka Rose garlic in containers?
Yes, Nootka Rose garlic can be grown in containers. Use a container that is at least 12 inches deep, with well-draining, nutrient-rich potting soil. Make sure that each clove has enough space to grow.

How do I know when Nootka Rose garlic is ready to harvest?
Late to mature, the plants will flop over when ready to harvest. Cure the bulbs in a dry, well-ventilated area for several weeks before storing them.
