Mizuna Seeds, Benigoromo
(Brassica rapa subsp. nipposinica). With their flaming serrated foliage tinged in a deep, fiery red that flickers like a flame, these bring to mind sizzling fireworks. The crimson- crackled leaves are abundant in anthocyanin, a polyphenol known for its health benefits and immune-boosting properties. Ideally, seeds are sown in late summer or early fall. As winter approaches and temperatures drop, the flashy crimson hue of the leaves becomes more pronounced. Unlike its spicier green mizuna cousins, Benigoromo boasts a mild and crisp, subtle mustard flavor, making it best enjoyed raw in salads. The leaves add a striking contrast to green lettuces; however, their colorful pigmentation fades when cooked.

Growing Tips
Benigoromo mizuna grows rapidly in cool, moist soil with good drainage. It thrives in both spring and fall conditions, and can even tolerate mild frosts. Regular harvesting promotes regrowth, and light shade during hot spells helps prevent bolting and leaf bitterness.
When to Grow
Direct sow in early spring or late summer for best results. In zones with mild winters, Benigoromo mizuna can be grown continuously under row covers or cold frames. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'
How to Sow and Plant
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep directly into well-prepared beds or containers. Space plants 6 to 8 inches apart in rows, or broadcast sow and thin as needed. Maintain evenly moist soil to ensure fast germination and healthy seedling development.
How to Grow
Water regularly and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a light, nitrogen-rich fertilizer every few weeks. Harvest individual leaves or entire plants at baby or mature stage. Shade cloth can extend harvest in warmer months.
How to Save
- Allow plants to bolt and flower.
- Let seed pods fully mature and dry on the plant.
- Harvest dry stalks and place them in a breathable bag.
- Crush pods to release seeds.
- Sift and store seeds in a cool, dry place in airtight containers.
FAQ
Can Benigoromo mizuna be harvested multiple times?
Yes! It’s perfect for cut-and-come-again harvesting. Trim outer leaves or cut the whole plant about 1 inch above the soil and it will regrow several times.
Is Benigoromo mizuna spicy like mustard greens?
It has a mild, peppery flavor—less intense than traditional mustard greens—making it a versatile ingredient for raw salads or lightly sautéed dishes.
Will Benigoromo mizuna grow well in containers?
Absolutely. It grows quickly and compactly in pots or raised beds. Just ensure good drainage and consistent watering for healthy, flavorful leaves.
