Description
(Brassica rapa subsp. nipposinica). This variety brings sizzling fireworks to mind with its flaming serrated foliage tinged in red. The crimson-crackled leaves are rich in anthocyanin, a polyphenol known for its health benefits and immune-boosting properties. Ideally, seeds are sown in autumn. As winter approaches and temperatures drop, the flashy crimson hue of the leaves becomes more pronounced. Unlike its spicier green mizuna cousins, Benigoromo boasts a mild and crisp, subtle mustard flavor, making it best enjoyed raw in salads. The leaves add a striking contrast to green lettuces; however, their colorful pigmentation fades when cooked.
Growing Tips: Benigoromo mizuna grows rapidly in cool, moist soil with good drainage. It thrives in both spring and fall conditions, and can even tolerate mild frosts. Regular harvesting promotes regrowth, and light shade during hot spells helps prevent bolting and leaf bitterness.
