Description

(Arachis hypogaea). An heirloom variety improved by Gordon Schronce of Iron Station, North Carolina. Over a period of several years, after beginning with a few black peanuts a friend had given him, Gordon hand selected those seeds that had darker skins and more seeds per shell. Thanks to his efforts, the Schronces Black is darker, often has 3 to 4 seeds per shell, and is slightly sweeter than the similar Carolina Black Peanut. And it is black! Makes for a stunning arrangement when served with the Tennessee Red peanut.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Schronce’s Black peanut is a rare heirloom variety that thrives in warm conditions. It prefers full sun and loose, sandy, well-draining soil with a pH of around 6.0. Soil should be rich in organic matter but not high in nitrogen, as peanuts fix their own nitrogen. Water consistently, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.

When to Grow

Plant Schronce’s Black peanut after the last spring frost when soil temperatures reach at least 65 F. Since peanuts are frost-sensitive, check your local region’s last frost date to determine the best planting time. How to Sow and Plant

Direct sow in a warm, sunny location with loose, sandy soil. Plant 1-2 inches deep, spacing plants 6-8 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart. Seeds sprout in 7-14 days. Keep the planting area well weeded, as flowers need a clear path to send down pegs that burrow into the soil and develop peanuts.

How to Grow

Weed carefully to avoid disturbing the shallow roots. When plants begin to flower, mound soil around the base to encourage pegging. Once pegs develop, keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering. About two weeks before harvest, discontinue watering to allow the peanuts to mature properly. Peanuts are ready for harvest when the leaves turn yellow. After harvesting, dry the plants in a warm, well-ventilated area for 2-3 weeks before shelling.

How to Save

  • Gently check the soil for peanuts when the plant's foliage begins to yellow.

  • Pull the entire plant and shake off any excess soil.

  • Allow the plant to dry for about a week.

  • Remove pods from the plant and dry them in a cool, dry space for 2-3 weeks to cure.

  • Enjoy peanuts raw, boiled, or roasted, or save them to grow again next season.

FAQ

Can I grow Schronce’s Black peanuts in containers?
Yes, but use a deep container (at least 12 inches) with loose, sandy soil to allow proper peg development.

Do I need to remove the shells from Schronce’s Black peanuts before planting?
Yes, plant them with the shells removed but keep the thin, papery seed coat intact for better germination.

How do I know when Schronce’s Black peanuts are ready to harvest?
When the leaves turn yellow and the inside of the pod has darkened.
