Description

Fragrant blooms in an unusual range of colors for a phlox—pale lavender to deep violet blue. White star-like centers and intricate contrasting striping complete the breathtaking vision of splendor. Bushy plants are incredible massed in borders, in front of walls, or of course for cutting gardens. Plants reach 2 feet in height, blooming over a very long season. Butterflies love them, too!

Growing Tips: Direct sow in place as soon as soil can be worked. Plants require full sun, rather rich, humusy soil and moderate moisture.

When to Grow

Sugar Stars is the longest-season phlox of the three at 84 to 100 days, but it is still best direct sown in place as soon as the soil can be worked, as it takes light frost and resents root disturbance. Sow 1/8 inch deep at about 65 degrees F, keeping the seed evenly moist through the 5 to 10 day germination. If you prefer an indoor start, sow about 4 weeks ahead and set the plants out young, while light frost is still possible.

Set the bushy plants about 8 inches apart in rich, well-drained soil. They finish at around 2 feet and bloom over a very long season.

How to Sow and Plant

  • Seeds germinate in 14-21 days.
  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant after all chance of frost has passed.
  • Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep.
  • Ideal germination temperature is 65 F.
  • Keep seeds evenly moist until germinated.

How to Grow

  • Phlox can tolerate full sun to shade.
  • Rich, well-drained soil is best.
  • Provide adequate moisture.
  • Space plants 8 inches apart.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming.

PESTS/SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Powdery mildew and fungal issues are common pests of phlox.
  • These can be avoided by improving air circulation and keeping foliage dry while watering plant.

How to Save Seeds

  • Harvest seeds when capsules turn brown.
  • Save seed over winter in a cool, dark, dry place.
