Sweet corn should be planted into the richest soil available when soil temperatures reach about 60 degrees F, after all danger of frost is past. This timing ensures optimal germination and growth. If you live in an area with shorter growing seasons, starting the seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost date can give the plants a head start. To sow Art Verrell's sweet corn, plant the seeds 1-2 inches deep in cool soil and up to 2 inches deep in warm, dry soil. Space the seeds about 12 inches apart, and ensure rows are spaced 24 to 30 inches apart to provide adequate room for growth and air circulation. It's crucial to plant corn in blocks of at least four rows to facilitate wind pollination, which is necessary for good kernel formation​. Succession planting prolongs harvest.

Once planted, maintaining proper soil moisture is vital. Sweet corn requires about 1 inch of water per week, and more frequent watering may be necessary in sandy soils or during dry spells. Fertilizing is also important; side-dress the corn plants with a high-nitrogen fertilizer when they are about knee-high, and again when the tassels appear. This helps support vigorous growth and healthy ears. Additionally, keeping the area weed-free through shallow cultivation or mulching will reduce competition for nutrients and water.

• Corn is wind pollinated and will easily cross with other varieties (including GMO corn!). You will need at least 1 mile of isolation to avoid cross pollination. You can also use staggered timing or caging techniques.
• Hand pick ears when fully dried on stalk. Seeds keep best if left on the ear; just remove at planting time.
• Sweet corn seeds will remain viable for 2 years; dent corn will last up to 5 years when properly stored.
