Growing Guide

When to Grow

Bronze Queen builds an airy 2.5- to 3.5-foot frame before it flowers, so it wants the whole warm season: start it indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost. Scatter the seed on the surface and press it in rather than burying it, because light aids germination, and expect sprouts in 10 to 21 days at 70-75°F. Harden off and plant out 2 weeks after your last frost has passed; in long-season areas you can direct sow at that same point instead. The first chocolate-colored blooms open around 70 days from sowing, on a plant that is not frost hardy.

How to Sow and Plant

  • Seeds germinate in 7-21 days.
  • Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost and transplant 2 weeks after last frost has passed.
  • Gardeners in long- season areas can direct sow 2 weeks after last frost.
  • Surface sow seeds and gently press into soil, as light aids germination.
  • Ideal germination temperature is 70-75 F.

How to Grow

  • Plants prefer full sun, though in southern locales a bit of afternoon shade is ideal.
  • Provide well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Keep plants well fed; they like highly fertile soil and regular watering.
  • Space plants 12 inches apart.
  • Deadhead to encourage continued blooming.
  • Most varieties are on the taller side, and should ideally be located in the middle and back of the landscape design.

PESTS/SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • A disease- and pest-free flower.

How to Save Seeds

Saving sunflower seeds is very easy!

  • Plants will readily self sow but will often bloom late and are better saved and started indoors the following spring.
  • Hand pick dried seed capsules before they shatter and scatter all over the garden.
  • Save seeds in a cool, dark, dry place over winter.

What gardeners are saying

  • Sturdy, healthy plants: Easy from seed and grows into strong, healthy plants.

  • Long bloom season: Fountains of flowers for about two months, then good seed.

  • Heads up: The bronze is subtle; some find it reads brown in the garden.
