Description

(Capsicum annuum). This colorful mix of dainty bell peppers is an old Ohio family heirloom. This trio of mini red, yellow, and chocolate bell peppers was introduced to the Seed Savers Exchange by member Lucina Cress. Lucina received the seeds from an elderly neighbor woman and began to grow them out. The 2-inch mini bell peppers became locally famous, as Lucina would sell hundreds of jars of cabbage-stuffed pickled peppers at her local church bazaar each year. We love these little peppers for snacking, stuffing, or pickling. Plants produce an abundance of tiny colorful orbs, easy to grow and so rewarding.

Growing Tips: Mini Bell Mix peppers thrive in full sun and nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. These compact plants are highly productive and require regular watering and feeding to maintain vigorous growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and deter weeds. Regularly harvesting ripe fruits will encourage continued production throughout the season. Peppers often appreciate a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your average last frost date. Transplant outdoors once the danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain above 60°F. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in moist, sterile seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently warm, ideally between 75–85°F, for strong germination. Once seedlings develop two sets of true leaves, transplant them to larger containers and grow under bright light until ready for hardening off.

How to Grow

Transplant into full sun and well-amended soil. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Water evenly and deeply, especially during flowering and fruit set. Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with an organic blend. Due to their compact size, staking is rarely needed. Harvest regularly to stimulate continuous production.

How to Save Seeds

  • Allow peppers to fully ripen on the plant until deep red, yellow, or chocolate.
  • Cut open the pepper and remove seeds.
  • Spread seeds on a screen or paper towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Stir daily to ensure even drying.
  • Once completely dry, store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
  • Label with variety and year. Seeds remain viable for up to 3-5 years.
