Description

(Capsicum annuum). Huge yields of easy-to-grow, sweet violet fruit! Perfect for salads and salsas. Pointed, wedge-shaped fruit is purple streaked with pale yellow. We originally received a few seeds of this variety from a Russian seed trader. Ripens red. Very lovely and delicious, sweet, crisp and thick-walled. One of the finest and prettiest peppers we have tried!

Growing Tips: Violet Sparkle peppers thrive in warm, well-drained soil and full sun. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Stake plants if fruit becomes heavy. Harvest when the purple hues mature into red for peak sweetness. Peppers often appreciate a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer weather.

Growing Guide

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost date. Transplant outdoors once soil is warm and night temperatures stay above 55°F. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep soil consistently moist and warm (75–85°F) until germination. Harden off seedlings before transplanting into the garden or containers.

How to Grow

Provide full sun, rich soil, and consistent moisture. Fertilize with a balanced organic formula every few weeks. Pick fruit when it ripens from violet to red for best flavor. Regular harvesting encourages continued production.

How to Save Seeds

  • Choose fully ripe, red fruits from healthy, true-to-type plants.
  • Cut open the pepper and remove seeds.
  • Spread seeds on a screen or paper towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Stir daily to ensure even drying.
  • Once completely dry, store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
  • Label with variety and year. Seeds remain viable for up to 3-5 years.
