Description

(Capsicum annuum). 60-75 days. A wonderful, chocolate-colored sweet pepper developed by Elwyn Meader and introduced by the University of New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station in 1965. These oblong peppers ripen from green to a rich brown and have a deliciously sweet taste. Perfect for northern gardens, as they ripen early in cooler climates.

Growing Tips: Start indoors in bright light 8-12 weeks before last frost date. Heat mat helps to warm soil and speed germination. Peppers often appreciate a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer weather.

Growing Guide

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last spring frost date. Transplant outdoors after all frost danger has passed and nighttime temperatures stay above 60°F. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting trays or pots filled with fine, moist mix. Maintain soil temperatures between 75–85°F for optimum germination. Use a heat mat if needed. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, transplant into larger containers and grow under strong light until ready for outdoor planting.

How to Grow

Transplant hardened-off seedlings into full sun and well-prepared, compost-enriched soil. Space plants 18–24 inches apart. Water deeply and consistently, especially during flowering and fruiting. Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer. Provide staking or cages to support plants loaded with mature fruit.

How to Save Seeds

  • Choose fully ripe, dark chocolate brown fruits from healthy, true-to-type plants.
  • Cut open the pepper and remove seeds.
  • Spread seeds on a screen or paper towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight.
  • Stir daily to ensure even drying.
  • Once completely dry, store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
  • Label with variety and year. Seeds remain viable for up to 3-5 years.
