Description

(Catharanthus roseus). It is a dwarf bedding vinca with dazzling raspberry-colored blooms. This delicate-looking flower is one of the most heat- and drought-tolerant blooms we have seen! The compact plants reach about 8 inches tall and 8 to 12 inches wide. They will endure intense heat and humidity and can tolerate full sun. Excellent in pots, beds, borders, and planted en masse.

Note: All parts of the plant are poisonous!

Growing Tips: Heatwave Raspberry vinca is a heat-tolerant variety that performs well in hot, sunny conditions. It thrives in well-draining soil and requires minimal care, making it ideal for beginner gardeners. For best growth and blooms, choose a location that receives 6-8 hours of full sun daily.

Growing Guide

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date or plant directly outdoors once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have reached 75-80 F. Vinca is a tender tropical that is sensitive to frost and sits in cool ground rather than sprouting, so it’s best to wait until warmer temperatures prevail; germination takes 7 to 21 days. If you’re not sure how to find your area's first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil or seed-starting mix. Keep the soil moist but not wet, with a temperature of 75-80 F for optimal germination. Once the seedlings have developed a few leaves and outdoor temperatures have stabilized, transplant them 9-12 inches apart in the garden.

How to Grow

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding overwatering. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to encourage vibrant blooms. Vinca does not require deadheading, as it self-cleans and continues blooming through the season.

How to Save Seeds

  • Pinch seed pods off after flower petals drop and pods become brown in color.
  • Let the pods dry in a paper bag.
  • When the pods have dried, pop them open to remove the seeds.
  • Store in a cool, dry, and dark place until you are ready to plant.

FAQ

Can Heatwave Raspberry vinca be grown in containers?

Yes, it performs well in containers. Use well-draining potting mix, and ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.

How tall does Heatwave Raspberry vinca grow?

It typically grows to about 8 inches tall with good branching. It's a compact plant that spreads to cover around 8-10 inches, making it suitable for flower beds or containers.

Does Heatwave Raspberry vinca attract pollinators?

Mainly butterflies and moths. The narrow-throated blooms are difficult for bees to work, and the plant largely self-pollinates, so grow it for long-season color and heat tolerance rather than as a primary bee plant.
