Description

(Raphanus sativus). This radish was bred to be high in antioxidants. The result: a gorgeous rose-pink color from skin to center. Pusa Gulabi, which means “rose” in Hindi, is a large, cylindrical, full-pink winter radish that is best for summer and fall planting. Growing Tips

Choose a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil to ensure optimal growth. The soil should be loose and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged to prevent the roots from becoming woody or splitting. Adding a layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture and control weeds.

When to Grow

The Pusa Gulabi radish can be sown in mid-summer to early fall for a fall harvest. These radishes prefer cool temperatures, ideally between 50-75 F, which helps them develop their sweet and mild flavor.

How to Sow and Plant

To plant Pusa Gulabi Radish, sow seeds directly into the garden 1/4 inch deep and about 1 inch apart. Space rows 12 inches apart. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to about 4 inches apart to give each plant enough space to develop properly. Radishes can be planted in succession every 2-3 weeks to ensure a continuous harvest. Water the seeds immediately after planting and keep the soil moist throughout the germination period.

How to Grow

Maintain consistent moisture by watering regularly, especially during dry spells, to encourage fast growth and tender roots. Thin the seedlings to 4 inches apart if they become overcrowded. Weed the area regularly to reduce competition for nutrients. Radishes do not typically need fertilization if planted in fertile soil, but you can amend the soil with compost before planting to provide additional nutrients.

How to Save

  • Radishes are insect-pollinated, so you’ll need to isolate varieties by up to 1/2 mile or stagger plantings to avoid flowering at the same time.
  • Staggering can be easy because of the radish’s quick maturity.
  • Allow flower stalks to shoot up and seed pods to dry on the plant before picking pods and opening by hand to remove the seeds.
  • Seeds will remain viable for up to 5 years when stored in an airtight container.
