Description

Salpiglossis caught everyone’s eye in our flower trials. Nicknamed “painted tongue,” its large petunia-like blooms are splashed with vibrant purple-pinks and yellows. These pretty flowers are native to southern Chile and are related to nicotiana. Plants average 2.5 feet tall. Suitable for cut flowers. Loads of colorful blooms!

Growing Tips: Direct sow soon after last spring frost. Requires full sun, rich soil, and moderate moisture to attain perfection. Cut frequently or remove spent flowers for highest production.

When to Grow

Direct sow this mix outdoors soon after your last spring frost, or start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks ahead of that date. Seeds sprout in 14 to 21 days at a germination temperature of 70 to 75 F. Plants are not frost hardy, so set any transplants out only once frost danger has passed. Give them a spot in full sun with rich, well-drained soil, spacing plants 9 to 12 inches apart; plants reach maturity in 100 to 110 days.
