Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). This is the “winter grape” tomato of old Italy, where farmers would hang the fruit-covered vines and they would stay fresh well into the winter. Growing Tips

The A Grappoli d'Inverno tomato grows best in well-draining, rich soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0, and it requires full sun exposure. It is known for its ability to ripen slowly after harvest, allowing for storage and use well into the colder months.  Learn More >>

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors approximately 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date, especially in cooler climates. Transplant outdoors once temperatures reach about 75-95 F. This variety can continue producing into the winter, especially when grown in containers and protected from frost.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed trays or pots, maintaining warm temperatures for optimal germination. Transplant seedlings into the garden or larger containers when they have at least two sets of true leaves. Space plants about 24 inches apart if growing in rows, or less in raised beds.

How to Grow

These tomatoes require regular watering, especially during dry periods, and benefit from mulching to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Staking or caging is recommended to support the plant as it can reach up to 4 feet tall and produces heavy clusters of fruit. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a high-potassium fertilizer to encourage fruiting. Harvest tomatoes when they are partially ripe and allow them to finish ripening indoors for winter storage.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and crossing isn’t likely; separating by 25 feet is sufficient for pure seed, except for the potato-leaf varieties like Brandywine.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for 1-2 days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
