Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Brilliant reddish-pink oxheart-type fruit—frequently exceeding one pound! The fruit of this heirloom is firm and meaty like all oxheart types—great for paste, canning or fresh use. The crack-resistant fruit contains very few seeds and shows very little tendency to develop cores—just rich-tasting, solid flesh across each hefty slice! Heavy production all season long. Originated outside of Budapest, Hungary, around 1900.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Plant in a sunny location that gets 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0 to 6.8. Water deeply once or twice weekly, ensuring even moisture levels to prevent stress. This indeterminate variety will need staking or caging to support its vigorous growth and large, heart-shaped fruits.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Transplant seedlings outdoors once all frost danger has passed and temperatures are consistently above 60 F. Use a frost date chart to plan the best planting time for your region.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix, maintaining a soil temperature of 70-80 F for germination. You can use a heat mat to help keep the soil warm. Harden off seedlings over a week before transplanting outdoors. Space plants about 24 inches apart for proper air circulation.

How to Grow

Water consistently, aiming for 1-2 inches per week. Focus watering at the base of the plant to minimize foliage diseases. Fertilize with a balanced or tomato-specific fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Prune suckers to improve airflow and channel energy into fruit production. Apply mulch to conserve soil moisture and reduce weeds.

How to Save

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
