Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). A favorite variety, introduced from Russia. One of the most beautiful and attractive tomatoes we have ever grown. It is very ribbed and pleated, but otherwise very uniform, large and perfect looking. It’s a vibrant watermelon-pink color with cream-colored speckles that really make the fruit sparkle and glisten. These short, indeterminate plants produce a large mass of fruit in a thick clustered area in the center of the plant. The flavor is sweet and mild; the flesh is firm and the seeds are very few.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

The Mushroom Basket tomato is a stunning heirloom variety that thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of it daily. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. Provide strong staking or caging, as the vines are vigorous and the fruits can be quite heavy.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last frost date in your region. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and temperatures don’t drop below 60 F. For shorter growing seasons, raised beds or black plastic mulch can help warm the soil and extend the growing period.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in a quality seed-starting mix. Keep a soil temperature of 70-80 F for optimal germination; use a heat mat if necessary. Harden off seedlings for 7-10 days by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting. Space plants about 24 inches apart.

How to Grow

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting and side-dress with compost or additional fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season. Prune suckers (small shoots that develop between the main stem and branches) to focus the plant’s energy on fruit production. Monitor for pests like aphids and hornworms, and use organic controls if needed.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
FAQ

Do I need to prune my Mushroom Basket tomatoes?
Yes, pruning suckers helps focus the plant’s energy on producing larger, healthier fruits and improves airflow, reducing disease risks.

How tall do Mushroom Basket tomato plants grow?
As indeterminate plants, they can grow 6-8 feet or taller, so they’ll need sturdy support such as stakes or cages.

How do I use Mushroom Basket tomatoes in cooking?
Their tangy-sweet flavor and striking ribbed appearance make them ideal for fresh dishes like salads and gourmet platters. They can also be roasted or used in light sauces to preserve their texture and vibrant flavor.
