Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Massive trusses of dusky-rose to purple cherries with a smoky blush. The tiny cherries are a half-inch across, and contain very few seeds, making them perfect for fresh eating, yet solid enough for cooking or for making a deep, rich red tomato paste. Superior balance of sweetness and acidity, with a rich, lingering aftertaste. We’re crazy about it for snacking right in the garden! Bred for superior flavor by Gourmet Genetics.

Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Rosella tomatoes perform the best in full sun and rich, deep soil. Because of their smaller size, Rosella tomatoes are also suitable for container gardening. In cooler climates, using a heat mat helps to warm the soil and speed up germination.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost. After the danger of frost passes and the soil warms, transplant seedlings outdoors. Check local and region-specific frost dates to time planting.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting trays in warm soil. Transplant seedlings to larger pots when they have two sets of true leaves. Once hardened off, plant them outdoors with a spacing of about 24 inches.

How to Grow

Water consistently to maintain moisture without soaking the soil. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer to encourage fruiting. Rosella tomatoes grow to about 2 feet tall and usually don’t require heavy staking.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
