Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Sunrise Bumble Bee tomatoes are indeterminate and thrive in full sun and rich, deep soil. Regular watering and good air circulation are very important to prevent diseases. We recommend staking or caging to support their vines.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Once the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed, transplant seedlings outdoors. In cooler climates, consider using black plastic mulch or a heat mat to help warm the soil early in the season.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed trays with warm soil. When transplanting, space plants about 18-36 inches apart. Sunrise Bumble Bee plants grow quite tall and can use staking or caging for support.

How to Grow

These plants require consistent watering—about an inch per week—and benefit from a balanced fertilizer applied every two weeks. Pruning lower leaves improves air circulation, which helps prevent disease. Sunrise Bumble Bee tomatoes are somewhat resistant to cracking, making them suitable for diverse climates.

How to Save
  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.
FAQ

How tall do Sunrise Bumble Bee plants grow?
They can grow up to 6 feet tall, requiring staking or caging to support their height.

How often should Sunrise Bumble Bee tomatoes be harvested?
Harvest every two to three days once the fruits are fully colored and slightly firm. Frequent harvesting encourages continued fruit production and therefore better flavor.

Are Sunrise Bumble Bee tomatoes suitable for greenhouse growing?
Yes, they perform well in greenhouses, where the controlled environment can extend their growing season until late fall. Greenhouse growing can also provide protection from pests and diseases.
