Description

(Brassica rapa) This nutritious, richly flavored and high-yielding broccoli rabe from the Puglia region of Italy made more and bigger heads than others in our trials. We were astounded by the abundant yields of the delicious heads. Plants average 2-3 feet tall. This gourmet brassica is a delicacy in Puglia, where it is used in a range of dishes, often sauteed with garlic and drizzled with a bit of olive oil as a side dish or atop good quality bread. Broccoli rabe with orecchiette pasta is a famous dish from Puglia, and simply sublime!

Growing Tips: Broccoli rabe, particularly the Natalina di Fasano Cima Grande variety, grows best in cool weather conditions. For optimal growth, plant it in early spring or late summer. It requires well-draining, fertile soil enriched with organic compost. Ensure the soil is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. This variety prefers full sun.

When to Grow

Natalina di Fasano Cima Grande is best grown in USDA Hardiness Zones 3-10. For a spring harvest, sow the seeds in late winter or early spring. For a fall harvest, plant in late summer. This crop prefers temperatures between 60 F and 80 F, but can tolerate light frost. It's important to check your local frost dates to avoid planting too early or too late. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow very early indoors, or direct seed outdoors 2-4 weeks ahead of the last-frost date and again in midsummer for fall harvest. Plant seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Space plants 12 inches apart to allow adequate space for growth. Sprouts appear in 7-10 days.

How to Grow

This broccoli rabe matures in around 90 days. Keep plants moist, as plants do not tolerate drought. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture, control weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Good air circulation and regular watering at the base of the plants can prevent diseases. To harvest, cut the main stalk and leave the plant intact to encourage the growth of side shoots (smaller heads that will grow after the main stalk has been harvested).

How to Save Seeds

Allow the late season plants to bolt, and once they flower you can allow the seeds to dry completely, shake them free of the flowers, and save them in a cool, dark, and dry place for next year’s garden.
