Description

(Solanum melongena). A giant of the garden, this extraordinarily large, elongated eggplant is the perfect pick if you want mammoth-sized fruit that tastes delicious! Seed collector and friend of Baker Creek, Avinash Gune, embarked on a 1,000-mile quest from Pune, India to uncover the seeds of this legendary giant eggplant. His journey led him to the quaint Indian village of Barman, nestled in Madhya Pradesh, celebrated for its fertile soil nurtured by the waters of the Narmada River, an ancient river predating the Ganges. In Barman, Avinash was fortunate to obtain a ripe fruit from local farmer Kamat Nodia, securing the precious seeds and preserving the legacy of this extraordinary variety. On his explorations, Avinash heard stories of folks claiming to have grown these fruits to mammoth weights of 17 to 22 pounds, but he was unable to verify these bold statements. Avinash mentioned the fruit is reminiscent of the famed Jalgaon eggplant but three times the size! These massive yet majestic eggplants, adorned in vibrant green with delicate white pinstripes, are capable of weighing a staggering 4 to 9 pounds. With a flavor to savor, and boasting sweet and creamy flesh with fewer seeds. These colossal eggplants are particularly well suited for roasting and baking.

When to Grow

Start Giant of Barman eggplant seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost. Transplant outdoors once nighttime temperatures remain above 60°F, as cool weather slows growth and fruit set. In warmer regions, sow directly in late spring. This heat-loving crop needs long, warm days for maximum fruit development. How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix, maintaining temperatures between 80–85°F for optimal germination. Transplant seedlings to the garden when they are 4–6 inches tall and hardened off. Space plants 18–24 inches apart in rows 30–36 inches apart. Incorporate compost or aged manure into the soil before planting. Water well and mulch to maintain even moisture and soil warmth.

How to Grow

Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Feed every 3–4 weeks with organic fertilizer or compost tea. Stake or cage plants early to support large fruits and encourage upright growth. Giant of Barman eggplants benefit from full sun and warm nights. Harvest fruits when glossy and firm, as overripe ones may lose shine and become slightly bitter or spongy.

How to Save Seeds

  • Eggplants are not insect-pollinated, so it is not necessary to isolate the plants very much to ensure pure seed. For home gardeners, an isolation distance of at least 40 feet is sufficient for seed saving.
  • Allow fruit to become overripe; the fruit will become slightly wrinkled and soft.
  • Scoop seeds out, rinse, and spread out to dry thoroughly.
  • Properly stored eggplant seeds will remain viable for up to 4 years.

This Indian heirloom produces extra-large, green fruits with tender, mild flesh. Its impressive size and superb flavor make it ideal for grilling, roasting, or Mediterranean dishes.
