Description

Ships from late September through November.

(Hyacinthus orientalis). This snow-white hyacinth is named after Aeolus, the king of the Greek gods of the wind, and with its heavenly fragrance and cloudy white appearance, we think it is more than appropriate! The flower's ultra-fragrant blooms stand 10 inches tall. You will smell them before you see them!

Growing Tips: Aiolos hyacinth thrives in well-drained, sandy soil that is rich in organic matter. It is important to plant the bulbs in a location that receives full sun. Incorporating compost or peat moss into the soil can help improve drainage and nutrient content, which are critical for healthy growth. When handling hyacinth bulbs, it's advisable to wear gloves, as the bulbs can cause mild skin irritation in some individuals.

When to Grow

The optimal time to plant Aiolos hyacinth bulbs is in the fall, just before the first hard frost. This allows the bulbs to establish roots before winter sets in. In northern regions, this means planting in September or October, while in southern regions, October or November is preferable. These bulbs are hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8, and they require a cold period to bloom properly in the spring. In warmer zones, bulbs may need to be pre-chilled in a refrigerator for several weeks before planting. How to Sow and Plant

To plant Aiolos hyacinth, dig holes that are about 4 inches deep, and space the bulbs 3-6 inches apart. Place the bulbs with the pointed end up. After planting, water the bulbs thoroughly to help them settle into the soil. However, be cautious about overwatering, as hyacinth bulbs are prone to rot if left in overly wet conditions. A light layer of mulch can help retain moisture and protect the bulbs through winter. When planting in containers, ensure that the pots have adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging.

How to Grow

Once planted, Aiolos hyacinth requires minimal care. During the growing season, ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. These plants do well with minimal watering, especially during the blooming period. Fertilize the bulbs at planting and again in early spring with a balanced fertilizer or bone meal to encourage strong growth and vibrant blooms. After flowering, allow the leaves to yellow and wither naturally before removing them, as this process helps the bulbs store energy for the next year’s bloom.

How to Save Seeds

Hyacinths will return for about 3-4 years after planting, making them a short-lived perennial. To save bulbs for future planting, allow the plants to die back naturally after blooming. Once the foliage has completely withered and turned yellow, dig up the bulbs carefully, using a spade or fork to avoid damage. Gently brush off any excess soil and let the bulbs dry in a cool, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight for a few days. After drying, store the bulbs in a mesh bag or a paper bag filled with peat moss or sawdust to prevent moisture buildup. Keep the bulbs in a cool, dark place, ideally between 50-60 F, until you're ready to plant them in the fall.

FAQ

When does Aiolos hyacinth bloom?

It typically blooms in mid-spring, providing stunning white flowers that last for about 2-3 weeks. The exact timing can vary depending on the climate and planting conditions.

Can Aiolos hyacinth be grown indoors?

Yes, plant the bulbs in pots that are at least 6" deep, making sure that the bulbs don't touch each other or the sides of the pot. Water thoroughly and keep them in a cool, dark place for 10-12 weeks (basement or garage in cooler areas; refrigerate in warmer places). Once shoots appear, gradually expose them to light and warmer temperatures. This method is particularly popular for holiday blooms.

Is Aiolos hyacinth perennial?

Hyacinths will return for about 3-4 years after planting, making them a short-lived perennial. Bulbs will reproduce underground and it may be necessary to dig them up and divide or thin them from time to time.
