When to Grow

Count back 6 to 8 weeks from your last spring frost and start Pink under lights, pressing the seed onto the surface rather than covering it and never letting that surface dry. Hardening off matters more than the calendar here: the plants carry no frost tolerance at all, so hold them indoors until the last frost date has genuinely passed, then plant into full to partial sun. The soft pink blooms arrive 95 to 110 days from sowing, and succession sowing every 3 weeks from late spring to midsummer keeps them coming.

How to Sow and Plant

  • Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost.
  • Sow seeds 1/16 in deep.
  • Keep moist until seeds sprout.
  • The ideal soil temperature for germination is 70 F.
  • Seeds sprout in 14-21 days.

How to Grow

  • Plant in full to partial sun in a fertile, well-draining location.
  • In particularly hot climates lace flower will benefit from afternoon shade.
  • Space plants 8-12 in apart.
  • Succession sow every 3 weeks from late spring to mid-summer for continuous blooms.

PESTS/SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Fertilize occasionally if the lace flower is planted in nutrient-poor soil.

How to Save Seeds

  • Shake dried flower heads over a paper bag or a plate.
  • Use your hands to remove any remaining seeds from the flower head.
  • Store in a cool, dry, and dark place until you are ready to plant.

FAQ

Does Pink lace flower work as a cut flower?

Yes. The 2- to 2.5-inch, delicately scented blooms on 2- to 2.5-foot plants are ideal for cut flower use as well as in the landscape, and lace flower also attracts a wide diversity of pollinators.

How far apart should plants be spaced?

Space plants 8 to 12 inches apart, thinning to that final distance. They prefer well-drained, sandy soil and have average water needs.

Will the plants survive a frost?

No. Lace flower carries no frost hardiness and is grown as an annual here, so it goes out only once the last spring frost has passed and it is finished by the first fall frost. Plan on a single season from these plants rather than expecting them back next year.
