Description

(Cucumis melo). Also known as Israel Melon. An excellent-tasting, early melon and our favorite for texture. Commonly thought to have originated in Israel, where its name means “anchor” but may have actually originated in Hungary. Flavorful green flesh; good yields of nearly round, 3- to 4-lb fruit; a beautiful melon! Very fragrant. A longtime favorite of the Gettle family.

Growing Tips: Ha'Ogen melons grow best in rich, well-drained soil and warm, sunny conditions. Their slightly ribbed green-gold rinds and aromatic pale green flesh make them highly prized. Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting. Use mulch to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep soil temperatures stable. Space plants to allow for ample airflow and vine development.

When to Grow

Plant Ha'Ogen melon seeds outdoors after the final frost date, once soil temperatures reach at least 70°F. For shorter seasons, start indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep in rows spaced 4–6 feet apart. Space individual plants 18–24 inches apart. In mound-style planting, sow 2–3 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest seedling. Row covers can provide early warmth and pest protection but should be removed at flowering to allow for pollination.

How to Grow

Provide deep, consistent watering and avoid wetting leaves to reduce disease. Fertilize at vining and again during flowering using an organic balanced fertilizer. Prune excess vines if needed to direct energy to fruit. Harvest Ha'Ogen melons when the rind turns yellow-green and fruits slip easily from the vine with a fragrant aroma.

How to Save Seeds

Note: if you are planning to save seeds, you must isolate Cucumis melo varieties from each other to prevent cross-pollination, or bag the flowers and hand-pollinate them

  • Let fruits fully ripen and begin to soften on the vine
  • Cut the melon open and scoop out seeds
  • Place seeds in a bowl of water and ferment for 1–2 days
  • Rinse and remove floating debris
  • Spread seeds on a screen or paper towel to dry thoroughly
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place in labeled envelopes for up to 5 years

FAQ

How large do Ha'Ogen melons get?

Ha'Ogen melons are medium-sized, usually weighing 2 to 4 pounds. Their round shape, fragrant green flesh, and excellent sweetness make them ideal for fresh eating and small garden production.

Can Ha'Ogen melons grow in containers?

Yes, Ha'Ogen melons can be grown in large containers (minimum 5 gallons). Use a rich, well-drained soil mix and provide a trellis to support the vines and keep fruit off the ground.

Are Ha'Ogen melons open-pollinated or hybrid?

Ha'Ogen melons are open-pollinated, which means you can save seeds from mature fruits if they are isolated from other Cucumis melo varieties to maintain true-to-type characteristics.

What gardeners are saying

  • Sweet, complex flavor: Rich and spicy-sweet; many call it the best melon they have grown.

  • Fragrant and beloved: The scent fills the house; growers plant it year after year.

  • Personal-size fruit: Grapefruit-plus size, about right for two; happy on a trellis.

  • Ripens late: Often the last melon to ripen; harvest once it slips from the vine.

  • Heads up: Yields can be modest; keep fruit off damp soil or bugs and rot get in.
