Description

(Cucumis melo). Easy-to-grow, early-to-mature Asian melon with a succulent sweet flavor and crisp flesh. This gourmet variety originated in Japan and became a commercial success before it was discontinued in the early 1980s. The small, oblong- to pear-shaped fruit weigh about ½ pound each. Smooth, golden skin with incredible sweet, uniquely aromatic white flesh. This delicious personal-sized melon was almost lost and we are delighted to see it shine once again.

Growing Tips: Golden Crispy melons thrive in warm, fertile soil with ample sun exposure and consistent watering. Known for their sweet, crunchy flesh and bright golden skin, they benefit from good drainage and space to spread. Mulching helps conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. For optimal results, avoid overcrowding, and rotate crops yearly to prevent soil-borne diseases.

When to Grow

Direct sow seeds after the last frost date when soil temperatures are above 70°F or start indoors 3–4 weeks earlier to extend the season. Transplant outdoors once frost danger has passed. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Plant seeds 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep in rows 4–6 feet apart, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart. Alternatively, plant 2–3 seeds per hill and thin to the strongest seedling. Use row covers early to protect from pests and enhance germination. Select a site with full sun and rich, loamy soil for best results.

How to Grow

Water deeply and consistently, especially during flowering and fruit development. Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal risk. Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer when vines begin to run and again at bloom. Harvest Golden Crispy melons when they develop a rich golden color and emit a fragrant aroma near the stem.

How to Save Seeds

Note: if you are planning to save seeds, you must isolate Cucumis melo varieties from each other to prevent cross-pollination, or bag the flowers and hand-pollinate them

  • Let fruits fully ripen and begin to soften on the vine
  • Cut the melon open and scoop out seeds
  • Place seeds in a bowl of water and ferment for 1–2 days
  • Rinse and remove floating debris
  • Spread seeds on a screen or paper towel to dry thoroughly
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place in labeled envelopes for up to 5 years

FAQ

Are Golden Crispy melons good for short growing seasons?

Yes, with an 80–90 day maturity window, Golden Crispy melons can succeed in shorter seasons when started indoors and transplanted after the last frost into warm, fertile soil with full sun exposure.

Do Golden Crispy melons require hand-pollination?

In most outdoor settings, bees and other pollinators are sufficient. If pollination rates are low, hand-pollination with a soft brush can increase fruit set, especially in greenhouses or low-pollinator areas.

Can I grow Golden Crispy melons vertically?

Yes, Golden Crispy melons can be trellised with proper support for fruits. Using mesh slings or nets to cradle melons prevents vine stress and optimizes space in smaller garden plots or raised beds.

What gardeners are saying

  • Easy, vigorous vines: Grows like crazy with little care and few pests.

  • Heavy setter: Around ten small melons per vine, sometimes far more.

  • Personal size: One melon serves a person; thin skin, almost no rind.

  • Honeydew-like when ripe: Sweet and crisp if left to turn deep gold.

  • Heads up: Many find the texture mealy and the flavor mild; opinions split.
