FAQ
What do the flowers of Ice Ballet look like?
This 3-foot-tall milkweed produces lovely white flower umbels that beckon an incredible diversity of beneficial insects and pollinators. The bees could not get enough of those icy-white blooms at our trial gardens in Missouri.
Where should I plant it?
In full sun with well-drained soil. It is a perfect choice for the meadow, cottage garden, beds and borders and, of course, pollinator gardens, and it also grows well in containers. Keep plants well watered.
How do I save seed from my own Ice Ballet plants?
Grow more than one plant: milkweed is insect-pollinated and does not self-pollinate reliably, so a lone plant sets few pods, and seed saved near pink swamp milkweed comes back largely pink rather than white. Wait until a pod splits open under a light squeeze of the hand and the seeds inside have gone dark brown. Squeeze the pods open, pull the seed away from the silks, then dry it for about a day somewhere warm and dry and store it in a sealed bag in the fridge. Seed you save has not been pre-stratified the way our packets are, so before it will sprout it needs either a fall or winter sowing outdoors or 30-60 days of moist cold in the refrigerator; 30 days is enough for Asclepias incarnata.
