Description

(Moringa oleifera). Easy to grow as an annual in the north! Moringa contains 46 antioxidants and 18 amino acids and is a complete protein. Unlike other varieties of moringa, this special dwarf variety from India will remain short and is very well suited to container growing, which makes it much easier to grow in the U.S. Moringa is native to the tropics and the subtropics; container growing will allow you to bring your tree inside for the winter. This plant is prized for its high-protein leaves, its rich concentration of minerals and vitamins, and its heavy load of antioxidants! Leaves, blooms, seeds, and immature seedpods, called "drumsticks," are edible; seeds are source of a high-quality oil.

WARNING: Roots are reputed to be poisonous, do not eat!

Growing Tips: Dwarf moringa grows best in warm climates with full sunlight. Choose soil that is well-draining, as the plant doesn't tolerate waterlogged conditions. It grows quickly, so frequent pruning helps maintain a manageable size and promotes bushier growth. The tree's leaves are edible and highly nutritious, making it an excellent addition to gardens focused on edible landscaping.

When to Grow

Dwarf moringa should be planted after the last frost date in your area. In warmer climates, it can be grown year-round. If you live in a zone with cold winters, grow moringa in pots and bring them indoors when temperatures drop below 50 F. Check your local frost dates to time the planting properly. How to Sow and Plant

Pre-soak the seeds in very warm water for 2-3 days, rinsing often. Sow seeds in pots or outdoors in warm soil. Plant about 3/4 to 1 inch deep in well-draining soil. Be sure to space plants at least 6 feet apart if you plan to grow them long-term as trees. For annual production in the north, space at 3 feet apart.

How to Grow

Water regularly but avoid overwatering. Moringa can tolerate poor soil conditions but grows best in well-draining, sandy soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Fertilize lightly with a balanced fertilizer if necessary. You can keep your plant in a large pot or set in the ground.

How to Save Seeds

Allow plants to flower and set pods. When pods turn brown and dry, harvest the shell of the seeds. Extract the seeds, and store them in a cool, dry place.
