Description
For flower lovers, finding one of these rare double-flowered Fernleaf peonies is like winning the lottery! They are more difficult to propagate than other peonies, and quite rare.
We acquired our very limited supply from our friend Ed Schultz, who began with a single plant 40 years ago and finally has enough tubers to share!
As their name implies, the striking ruby-red blooms of Fernleaf peony (Paeonia tenufolia) enchant on feathery, delicate foliage.
Earlier to bloom than other peonies, they are also shorter, growing only 15 to 20 inches tall.
While they are rare, they don't need to be coddled and are happy in a well-drained location that gets at least six hours of sun each day. They are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8 and can be planted in summer or fall, and they are cold hardy, even powering through a late-season snow in Ed's high-altitude climate in Montana!
