Description

(Papaver somniferum). Breadseed type. This variety puts on a particularly sensational show in the garden. The 3- to 4.5-inch feather-light blooms seem to float atop wispy 2- to 3-foot stems. Magnificent wine-colored blooms and misty blue-green lettuce leaf type foliage creates a bold contrast. This dramatic poppy is a garden designer's dream. It comes as no surprise that the variety was carefully selected and bred by Lauren Springer, a well-known garden designer and author! Lauren's painterly style shines through in this bold, grape-purple poppy, perfect for creating whimsical landscapes! The clouds of purple blooms are ultra-attractive to pollinators, especially bees. It's an annual that self seeds readily.

Growing Tips: Lauren's Grape is an annual poppy variety that thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and it's a favorite for both ornamental beauty and seed production. Growing up to 3 feet tall, this variety is perfect for garden borders or mass plantings, where it can also attract pollinators like bees.

When to Grow

Sow seeds in early spring or late fall. In cooler regions, fall sowing allows for natural cold stratification, promoting better germination in spring. If planting in spring, aim to sow seeds as soon as the soil can be worked. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post 'Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources.'

How to Sow and Plant

Scatter seeds directly on the soil surface, as they need light to germinate. Press the seeds lightly into the soil just barely covering them. Keep the soil moist until germination, which typically takes 14-21 days. Thin the seedlings to 8-10 inches apart once they sprout.

How to Grow

Once established, Lauren's Grape poppies are relatively low-maintenance. They are drought-tolerant but will perform best with regular watering during dry periods. Fertilize monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer, avoiding high nitrogen content, which can cause excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

How to Save Seeds

  • Poppies are mostly self-pollinating; however, small flies and honeybees may cross-pollinate closely planted varieties.
  • Often self-sows, but you can also harvest seeds when capsules turn brown and dry completely.
  • Save seed over winter in a cool, dark, dry place.
