Description

(Salvia rosmarinus). The plant has been used for centuries, both medicinally and in the kitchen. Small evergreen shrub is covered with needle-like aromatic leaves and a myriad of tiny pink or blue flowers in summer. Perennial in mild winter climates; elsewhere, grow in containers for overwintering indoors. The dark green leaves may be used fresh or dried. Flowers are beloved by bees. We offer select seed that is easier to start, but it still can be somewhat challenging. The plants are lovely and can live for years with proper care.

Growing Tips: Rosy rosemary thrives in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil and benefits from slightly alkaline conditions. Avoid overwatering, especially in humid climates, to prevent root rot. Prune lightly to encourage branching and prevent legginess.

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds in seed trays or pots filled with sterile seed-starting mix. Press seeds lightly into the surface and cover with a fine dusting of soil. Keep moist but not soggy. Covering with a heat dome or plastic helps keep consistant moisture. Provide bottom heat or place in a warm, sunny location to aid germination.

How to Grow

Once seedlings are 3–4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves, harden off for 7–10 days before transplanting. Choose a sunny site with good drainage. Mulch lightly around the base to suppress weeds and retain moisture, but keep away from stems to avoid rot.

How to Save Seeds

  • Allow plants to flower and form seed heads (typically in late summer).
  • Once seed heads dry on the plant, clip stems and place upside down in a paper bag.
  • Shake bag to release seeds; clean and dry thoroughly.
  • Store seeds in a cool, dark, dry place in a sealed, labeled container.
