When to Grow

Black Trumpet is the fastest of our painted tongues to flower, reaching bloom in 80 to 90 days, so either start it indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost for the longest season of color or direct seed outdoors after frost has passed. Surface sow and cover the seed with a thin layer of soil or cardboard until it germinates, which takes 14 to 30 days at 70 to 75 F, since the seed needs darkness. This half-hardy annual takes no frost, so wait until danger has passed to set plants out. It is the widest-growing of these four, so give each plant 12 to 18 inches in full sun to filtered shade.

How to Sow and Plant

  • Seeds germinate in 14-21 days.
  • Surface sow seeds but cover either with a layer of soil or cardboard until just germinated, as the small seeds need darkness in order to germinate.
  • Start indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost or direct seed outdoors after last frost.
  • Ideal germination temperature is 70-75 F.

How to Grow

  • Prefers full sun and mild summer weather; they cannot handle extreme heat and humidity.
  • A fairly drought-tolerant plant; do not over water.
  • Space plants 9-12 inches apart.
  • Provide rich, well-drained soil.
  • Deadhead to encourage continued blooming.

PESTS/SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • A fairly pest-free plant, but sometimes bothered by aphids.
  • Treat aphids with organic insecticidal soap.

How to Save Seeds

  • Seeds are quite small and contained within a capsule.
  • Harvest capsules when brown and dry, before the capsules shatter.
