Description

(Citrullus lanatus). Flesh is a gorgeous strawberry red, ripening to within a half-inch of the rind, and usually has very few seeds. Fine grained, distinctively flavored, and super sweet, it is classed among the best tasting by those who have tried it. The oblong, striped fruit reaches 15 to 25 pounds. With moderate disease resistance, this variety deserves to be the star of your summer garden. Originally selected from a Florida heirloom by Walt Childs and introduced in 1989 by our good friends at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Outstanding!

Growing Tips: Strawberry watermelon thrives in full sun and loose, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly and deeply to encourage strong root growth. Mulching helps retain moisture and reduce weed competition. Monitor fruit ripening closely for peak sweetness, and avoid overwatering as melons near maturity to prevent diluted flavor.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before your last frost date or direct sow outdoors once soil temperatures reach 70°F. Wait to transplant until all danger of frost has passed and soil is consistently warm. How to Sow and Plant

Sow 2–3 seeds per hill at 1 inch deep. Space hills 3–4 feet apart in rows spaced 5–6 feet apart. Thin to the strongest seedling per hill once true leaves emerge. Choose a site with full sun and rotate crops each year to reduce soilborne disease risk.

How to Grow

Water consistently, providing 1–2 inches per week, and adjust based on rainfall. Reduce watering slightly during ripening for concentrated sweetness. Fertilize at planting and again when vines begin to run. Use straw or melon cradles to elevate fruit off damp soil and prevent rot.

How to Save Seeds

  • Allow fruit to ripen fully and cure on the vine before harvesting.
  • Scoop seeds from the flesh and rinse in a strainer to remove pulp.
  • Spread seeds on a screen or paper towel in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight for 7-10 days.
  • Stir daily to ensure even drying.
  • Once completely dry, store in an labeled, airtight container in a cool, dark place.
